This talk will present recent field and laboratory studies conducted in collaboration with IRSN, IMPMC (Sorbonne University), Eawag and EDGE (University of Vienna). It will especially address uranium speciation and mobility in uranium mining-impacted environments, as well as zinc oxide nanoparticles transformation in freshwater sediments, under controlled redox conditions. It will emphasize the input from X-ray absorption spectroscopy, micro-X-ray fluorescence, and electron microscopy for solving elemental speciation and distribution at the atomic and microscopic scales in complex materials such as soils and sediments. This information is important to understand the (bio)geochemical processes involved in the scavenging and/or mobilization of trace elements in natural and anthropized environments.
